Issue 78 – Letters

The Glory Days of the Gold Dust Twins As a youngster, I idolized Walowac, Slack, Price, Greer, Byrd, etc. Therefore, I was glad to see so many players from the 1950s included in the Top 12 Marshall Basketball Players of All Time. Even though Cebe Price’s “Gold Dust Twin” Paul Underwood didn’t deserve a Top 12 spot, still there has never been anything else that would bring the Field House crowd to life like one of his patented 35-foot, rocking, two-hand set shots! It was great fun to hear the murmur begin as he got the ball and continue as he looked down at the floor in front of him, the rustle of anticipation as he rocked forward and back and let it fly, the increasing groundswell as the ball so high in the air approached the basket – and the unanimous roar as it impossibly swished through the net. Nothing like it!

Remembering Leo Byrd I just received my Spring 2012 Huntington Quarterly and was excited to see Leo Byrd as one of the 12 best basketball players in Marshall history. I grew up with Leo and was a close friend. His father was our minister at South Side Methodist Church and also the minister who married my husband and me 55 years ago. However, I was very disappointed to see Leo’s last name spelled incorrectly in the article heading. I trust that the next Quarterly will show that this mistake has been remedied.

Editor’s note: We are sorry for not catching the spelling error in our article heading. Thank you for sharing your memories of one of Marshall’s greatest basketball stars.

Ties to NetJets How appropriate that I would receive your magazine and see NetJets, whom my son flies for, on the cover. I absolutely love your magazine and look forward to receiving it.

A City We All Love The Huntington Quarterly does an excellent job promoting and giving Huntington the press it deserves. It is so refreshing to have such a positive publication concerning the city that we all obviously love.

Fascinating Stories I received my copy of HQ today and have already gone through the whole thing. What an amazing publication! The stories about Bill Noe and Chuck Yeager were fascinating, and “Relaxing on the Rails” was so interesting. Huntington has much of which to be proud. Thank you for this issue! Very enjoyable!
